Mani Monday: Overcast nails

Dear readers,

Last week I went for this nail combo here below but, unfortunately I had some problem with my SD card and somehow the pictures I took yesterday got deleted. I always like to show you how the nail polish wears after having it on for 7 days but no such luck this time, sorry guys. You'll have to take my word, then: It showed no chipping at all but you could see that it had slightly worn off around the ends of the nail.
Mani Monday: nail combo
Yesterday I was in the same nail mood as the weather: overcast skies with a few showers. I came home from a sunny day at the beach when it suddenly looked like someone had turned out the lights outside. I then decided to go for the L'Óreal Color Riche in 891 Noir Whisper nail polish that I'd bought recently but hadn't tried out yet. I already have this in a blue denim kind of shade that is a favourite of mine so I decided to get the same one in grey and another in a dark green. For some reason they are sold for half the usual price at a certain drugstore chain so I can get them for 2,95€ which is a bargain.
L'Oreal Color Riche in 891 Noir Whisper
This is my second most favourite nail polish brand as it features a rounded brush which makes application super easy. The opacity is great and the formula isn't either too thin nor too thick. This one has a slight texture to it, not quite like glitter so it's still easy to remove but it adds a gorgeous "je ne sais quo" look to the nails (fancy way of saying something special).
OPI base & top coat
My usual base & Top coat by O.P.I.
L'Oreal Color Riche in 891 Noir Whisper
And this is the finished look (two coats) without using any editing as I want to keep the colour as true as possible.  It reflects some light coming through the windows so it's shows lighter that it really is. At night it resembles a taupe brown, more like the background I used for these pics.

Spanish delicacies: Sobaos Pasiegos

Dear readers,

As a beauty blogger I understand how important it is to eat healthy food as this will reflect on your skin's appearance. But I also believe that it's ok to indulge yourself once in a while, it will also make you feel happier (if you don't overdo it) and this will show and make you look prettier. In other  words, happy tummy = happy demeanor. My post on the most delicious Paella is still very popular so I thought about continuing that trend and talk to you about all the yummy food you can get here in Spain.

I find that with the change of seasons our taste for food changes as well, at least mine does. Whereas I'm generally more drawn to salty food, having low blood pressure makes me crave for anchovies and olives, when Autumn arrives I find myself reaching more for chocolate and other sweet snacks.

So the time for salads is long gone, the temperatures have dropped quite a bit but not much, not here at least. Our body needs to prepare for the colder winter months and therefore it needs to accumulate a bit more fat. As I'm blessed with a pretty fast metabolism and don't put on much weight I don't worry about eating some chocolate or pastries once in a while, without overdoing it, of course!
Sobaos El Macho
The Sobao Pasiego would appear to be a simple square cake at first sight. It only contains sugar, eggs, flour and butter, this last ingredient being key for the most delicious and rich flavour. This cake is typical of the Valles Pasiegos in Santander in the North of Spain where dairy kettle is still a big part of the green hilly landscape. Such a high quality of milk produces Spain's best dairy products.
Sobaos El Macho
I had tried simple sobaos plenty of times and they just tasted like regular magdalenas (plain muffins) but I'd never tasted the real thing. A great aunt of the hubby used to live in a small village in Santander, very near Selaya and the Casa El Macho bakery, where these cakes are still baked by hand following the same ancient recipe, without adding any preservatives.
Sobaos El Macho
I discovered these sobaos on a vacation to Santander a few years back and I became obsessed. Last time we were up north I had the hubby drive me there just to eat at my favourite restaurant and buy loads of sobaos, that's a total of 4 hours to get there and back plus another 6 to get home.
Sobaos El Macho
This latest stash I got from a website called Los productos de Cantabria where they deliver it to your home without any added cost when you spend over 100€. So I got a few of the huge 1Kg 6-pack for ourselves, my mom, the in-laws and some friends.

What about you? Do your tastebuds switch into Autumn mode?

Mani Monday: nail combo

Dear readers,

This week I'm in the mood for some combo nails or what I like to call them: Claire nails. Over a year ago I watched a YouTube video by Claire Marshall where she had one hand painted in blue and the other in purple. Coincidentally I had just been to The Netherlands and purchased a couple cheap nail polishes from HEMA and I'd picked just the right shades.
This is last week's Mani Monday. Although I struggled with application due to an eye infection the polish has worn beautifully and it hasn't chipped or cracked.
For those of you who are lucky to have a HEMA nearby the shades that I used are 835 Light Blue and 828 Purple from the Long Lasting range. They are sold for 2.50€ and the formula is creamy and opaque, although I always apply two coats to be safe. The brush is cut straight and is medium sized so you can cover your nail bed perfectly in only 3 strokes.
If I had to rate these polishes I'd put them in 3rd place just behind Essie & L'Óreal. I think they are very good quality for the price although the colour selection is pretty basic.
These complimentary shades look gorgeous worn side by side, even more so when I'm tan. Luckily I've been able to go to the beach this past weekend and I'm hoping it will stay warm for a while longer. No need to rush into Autumn and Winter, right?
My usual nail care products: cuticle oil by China Glaze and base & top coat by O.P.I. They really help my manicure last longer so they are worth their prize.

Have you ever worn your nails like this?

#JapanCandyBox August

Dear readers,

Japan Candy Box is a monthly subscription for the candy lovers out there. You can choose from  different plans starting from 19.90$ per month. I went for the one month plan just to try it out as I was both curious and wanted to surprise the hubby: he loves all kind of candy and if it's fun even more so.
I placed my order on August 27th and it left their warehouse on September 1st. It took over 2 weeks to arrive but I'm used to purchasing products from Asian countries so I'm used to the waiting time and I don't mind.
The box seemed to have been through a rough time during the voyage and looked a bit bumped up but apart from that the goodies inside were all in perfect condition.
Under the wrapping paper and thank you card we found 10 different candy and snacks. As the packaging is all in Japanese writing, adding a description card is indispensable and very helpful.
We're a bit nervous about trying the Neru Neru Nerune DIY candy (first one from the left) as you need to follow the instructions on the back to prepare it before being able to eat it. I'm leaving you a link to a funny YouTube video by Sharla in Japan where you can see how difficult it is even for Japanese people to follow the instructions properly.
So far we are enjoying the products that we've tried but I don't think I will be ordering this again in the future, the only reason being that I'm not much of a candy lover. It makes a perfect gift for anyone who enjoys eating candy, though.

Stay sweet, y'all!

Guest Post: Effortless Habits for Stunning Look

We all know women with stunningly good looks who seem to make no effort at all to look that good. You have seen them: women with gorgeous hair, glowing skin, and radiant smiles on your way to work (and quite possibly in your office as well); you have seen them and wondered what the secret to their good looks is?
Let’s be realistic – nobody is born with it; it’s all about little tips and tricks you learn along the way.

Enough sleep

This may sound funny, but – have you been sleeping enough lately? When was the last time you took a nap in the afternoon or went to bed early? An average person needs between seven and nine hours of sleep to function properly, but people seldom listen to this advice and choose to drink more coffee instead.
By going to bed at approximately same time every night and avoiding coffee and food a couple of hours before you go to sleep, you will notice your body adapting to this new rhythm and you will start falling asleep easier. In the morning you will feel refreshed and energized, ready to face the challenges of the new day.

Detox and self-pamper

Even if we mind our diet and workout to stay toned and healthy, toxins can pile up in our organism making us sick and weakening our immune system. This is the reason why you should detox from time to time and clean up all the bad things that might cling to your internal organs.

Take a few days off, go to a spa, drink a lot of water, and eat ‘clean’ – whole grains, whole foods, lean protein, and a lot of vegetables. You will notice that your skin and hair are healthier, and that you have a lot more energy.

Beautiful skin

Not everyone was blessed with beautiful, flawless skin, so most of us need to pay special attention to lotions, creams, and serums we use in order to keep it young and glowing.

Sadly, even ladies with the most beautiful skin will hide their legs because of malfunctioning varicose veins. What is more, wearing heals while you work is not helpful at all, and you may even entertain the idea of wearing pants full-time. Fortunately, there are different ways to get rid of varicose veins, with sclerotherapy being by far the most popular one.

Preparation is the key

Stress troubles everyone, it makes you lose sleep, eat more, and age quickly. To avoid being under stress from the earliest morning, prepare in advance for the day ahead of you. Pack your bag, put on a face mask, and prepare your outfit for the following day. It may not seem like much, but it will save you time in the morning and give you a few extra minutes to apply makeup without fuss and leave home on time.

There will be days when doing even the simplest tasks will seem like a torment, and you will not have the energy to think about your skin, hair, and clothes. Nevertheless, you should be patient and persistent and you will notice how your looks will improve significantly with slightly changed habits.

Mani Monday: Autumn nails

Dear readers,

Last week I talked about my Essie nail polishes and I featured this shade here below called Chinchilly. Although we still have quite warm weather over here (up to 30ºC) I'm in mood for more Fall appropriate manicures.
This picture clearly depicts how well the Essie nail polish has worn, it's been 8 days and it hasn't chipped the tiniest bit. If I hadn't promised myself to start off posting these Mani Monday series I wouldn't have taken this off. It's such a gorgeous shade that I'm sure going to wear a lot during Autumn and Winter.
Today I was in the mood of one of my favourite Fall colour: yellow mustard. This shade is from the Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine in GNP 31. I could have done only one coat, that's how pigmented and opaque this polish is but I went for the usual two coats. I tried to make them thin but with this formula it's hard to achieve and I struggled a bit as I have a bad eye infection (my first one ever!) since Saturday and it doesn't seem to get better.
As per usual I used my current favourite base and top coat by O.P.I. I've used Seche Vite in the past but it's just too gluey for my taste and I hate working with it. I always try to be very patient when doing my nails as I'm quite a klutz so I don't mind waiting for them to dry properly.
Before filing my nails I let them soak for a few minutes in this cuticle oil by China Glaze. It smells delicious and is very nourishing. I assume it will last me for ages as I've had it for quite some time but it doesn't seem to have been used at all.
And this is the finished look, depending on how the light hits the nails they seem a warm gold or a mustard.

Are you excited for Fall? Tell me in the comment section below.

Mesothelioma Awareness Day

Dear readers,

September 26th is Mesothelioma Awareness Day. I'd never heard of this rare type of cancer until a couple of weeks ago when I got in touch with Cameron Von St. James. He told me a bit of his  story and asked me if I was willing to help spread awareness of this aggressive disease.
Mesothelioma Awareness Day 09/26/15
His wife, Heather Von St. James was diagnosed with Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma shortly after giving birth to their first child. Apparently she had been exposed to asbestos fibers from her father's work jacket when she was a child. She had to undergo a drastic surgery that involved a heated chemotherapy solution and the removal of her left lung. Almost 10 years later she and her husband are busy working on spreading awareness of Mesothelioma globally.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer affecting the membrane lining (Mesothelium) of the lungs and abdomen. There are three major types of Mesothelioma: pleural, peritoneal and pericardial; to simplify it for you: it can affect the lungs, the abdomen or the heart.

Stages of Mesothelioma:
Stages of Malignant Mesothelioma
Why is it difficult to get an early diagnose?

Key to fighting off any kind of disease is getting an early diagnose. In the case of Mesothelioma this is particularly difficult as its symptoms are common to more trivial ailments that they don't raise suspicion until it's frequently too late.

What is the cause?

Asbestos is the main cause and risk factor to developing this disease. Asbestos is a microscopic mineral that, when inhaled, lodges in the lining of lungs and abdomen. Even the tiniest amount of asbestos is a high risk as we have learned from Heather's story. Not only the men and women working in direct contact with asbestos are in danger but their families as well. Asbestos is still not banned in the US and was once used in more than 3000 consumer products. It can still be found in many homes, schools and commercial or industrial buildings.
Countries with Bans on Asbestos

What's the cure for Mesothelioma?

There's currently no cure for this disease although it's totally preventable. All we need is to stay clear from asbestos and press our governments to ban this carcinogen from the face of the Earth. Until then, a treatment of chemotherapy and surgery is the only option available to provide a benefit to patients and increase their life expectancy.

What can I do to help?

If you have read so far you're already doing a great deal. Being aware of this disease and maybe sharing this with others is a huge step in helping prevent it. One way of sharing is through social media. Heather has made it quite simple for us to spread word around, click here to go to her website and donate your social status on Twitter, Facebook and/or Pinterest.

Alterna Bamboo Color Hold + Shampoo

Dear readers,

My hair is my most precious feature, not because it's luscious and gorgeous in any way. Quite the opposite. It's mainly straight except for all the baby hairs that surround my face where it's quite unruly. It has become more and more sparse with age and it's so fine that it breaks only by caressing it. I've been trying different hair care routines for a long time. Finding the perfect sulfate-free shampoo has been a challenge as most of them are unable to produce any foam, which really annoys me.
Alterna Bamboo Color Hold + Shampoo & Conditioner
About two months ago I made a purchase at HQHair, I decided to try out the Alterna Bamboo Color Hold + shampoo and conditioner. Shortly after they were delivered I had my hair coloured at my regular hairdresser. It's been over two months now and I've just made an appointment for Friday. Usually I need to dye my hair every 4 weeks, 5 weeks, tops. But since I've been using this shampoo I can truly say that it has made my hair colour last longer.

I couldn't say the same about the conditioner, though. I started combining the two but the conditioner made my hair very frizzy. All the baby hairs where driving me crazy, standing all up like spiky stalagmites so I went back to using my trusted Macadamia natural oil moisturizing rinse.
Alterna Bamboo Color Hold + Shampoo
In case you aren't able to read the label in the picture, the shampoo is free of: sulfates, parabens, gluten, sodium chloride, phthalates & synthetic color. Finding a salt-free shampoo has proven very difficult as it's the cheapest but harmful ingredient that helps building up a nice foam. I'm not sure about what ingredient they are using instead as I'm not an expert in understanding cosmetic formulas by any means.
Alterna Bamboo Color Hold + Shampoo
About the packaging I already mentioned my thoughts on that in a previous post. As for the texture, it's quite thick in consistency, it has a faint sweet scent but I can't pinpoint what it exactly smells like. As I only wash my hair twice a week the shampoo doesn't foam up with the first wash, after I rinse it off and apply it for a second time it spreads more evenly and I can really get to the scalp and massage it all over. After the second more thorough rinsing the hair feels squeaky clean but not soft to the touch. As I need to condition my hair to tame down my flyaways anyway I don't mind using a conditioner or hair mask after shampooing so I can't really tell you how it feels on the hair once it's dry without using any additional product.
Alterna Bamboo Color Hold + Shampoo
Hopefully this was helpful to some of you. Leave me your thoughts in the comment section below. Have you ever used a sulfate free shampoo? Do you think it's better to use more natural products on the long run or do you feel it's just another trend?

Nail polishes: Essie

Dear readers,

We've been having the most suffocatingly hot summer this year and I haven't felt like doing any kind of nail art as of late. There have been weeks were I haven't even bothered to use any nail colour at all, only a plain base coat.

My first Essie nail polish came in a beauty box, I think it was a Glossybox, anyway it was ages ago. The one shade that came in the box was 64 Fifth Avenue which is one of my most worn summer shades, a bright coral-y orange.

Since then I've tried many brands: OPI, L'Óreal, China Glaze, Bourjois, KIKO, Deborah Milano, NYX, Max Faxtor, Barry M, Astor, Revlon, Maybelline, Yves Rocher and many others but my favourite formula has to be Essie.

I love the easy application, you only need two thin coats to achieve the perfect opacity and they are a dream to remove. They don't stain your fingers or nails and they give out a very glossy finish even without using a top coat. I'm not sure about their drying time as I never cared to test this out with any brand.

They have a wide variety in colour selection and I've recently found a website that sells them for only 7€. If I've been hesitant about getting more shades before now it's been because I didn't want to splash out the 12€ they are usually sold at but, at 7€ I'm happy to get all the shades I can get my hands on.

I started with a medium blue as I have a bunch of navys and darker tones but nothing quite like this. Lilac is also a pretty shade that I feel you can pull off during any kind of season and I've never owned any in this tone. And the star of the show: Chinchilly. I love taupe shades and this kind of grey screams autumn to me. Just in time as it has been raining cats and dogs all throughout the weekend.
What are your favourite shades for Autumn? Please, leave a comment below.
